Home Inspection

Maintenance Checklist for First-Time Buyers

As a new homeowner, you did all the responsible things. You got an inspection from Valley Building Inspections, started your home insurance policy, and changed your address with the postal service. While these are some of the most obvious things to check off your list, there are some home maintenance tasks you’ll want to take care of as well. So, here’s a quick guide to help you get started.

Change Furnace Filter

The HVAC system in your new home is critical for keeping you comfortable all year long. Therefore, proper airflow is vital if you want to stay cool in the summer and warm in the cooler months. That’s why changing the filter, or at least checking it, is essential as soon as you move in. The previous owners were under no obligation to change the filter, so it’s best you replace it with a new one. This will also help eliminate any lingering allergens or dust left from the previous homeowners.

Check Fire Detectors

Protecting your new investment is at the top of your mind. That’s why we highly recommend you check all of the batteries in your fire detectors. Additionally, you should plan on adding new ones in rooms that lack them. This will help keep you and your family safe. It’s also a good idea to check or install a carbon monoxide alarm.

Caulk Windows

If you want to keep pests out and cool air in, you’ll want to caulk around your windows. It’s likely that the previous owners didn’t even realize their aging home needed it. But as the new owners, you can do yourself and your wallet a huge favor by simply applying a thin strip around the windows.

Touch up Paint

Or you can paint rooms a new color altogether. Either way, touching up paint will help freshen up the space and give your new home a fresh start. If you have time, do this before you move in so that you’re not trying to settle in while painting. You should also go over all the trim and baseboards to give your new home a fresh, clean look.
