Air Quality Inspection

3 Reasons to Test Your Home’s Air Quality

Indoor air quality should be a concern for everyone. No matter where you live, the air quality in your home can significantly impact your health. Furthermore, letting things go undetected could be what’s causing your indoor allergies. If you suspect your sneezing and runny nose is more than a simple cold, then you need to call Valley Building Inspections for a home air quality test. If you’re still not sure, here are some reasons you should give us a call.

1. Radon

As an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas, radon occurs naturally in the soil and water but is extremely harmful. This gas is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. This gas is generated from the decay of uranium in the soil, and can only be detected when tested for. This gas can easily seep into your home without you knowing it, which is why it’s important to have professionals survey the area regularly, especially if radon has previously been found in high concentrations.

2. Asbestos

Like radon, asbestos can be found in nature, posing little risk until it’s brought indoors. In the past, asbestos was readily used as insulation in both commercial and residential buildings because of its heat-resistant properties. However, studies have found that asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer, leading home and commercial builders to resort to newer materials. Still, that doesn’t mean your older home doesn’t have asbestos. The only way to know for certain is to have your home’s air tested.

3. Chemicals

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the air in a home can have chemical concentrations of 100 times more than in the air outside. In fact, three-quarters of U.S. households use at least one pesticide or insecticide indoors every year. Due to the use of these chemicals, cleaning solutions, and other aerosol sprays, your home’s air quality could be at risk. Symptoms from chemical exposure can range anywhere from nausea to severe headaches, and should be taken seriously.
