3 Common Things Clogging Your Sewer

If you’ve been experiencing problems with your plumbing, something might be clogging your sewer. Clogs are a common issue that can cause various problems, including backups and slow drains. A clog can even cause sewer gases to come back up, stinking up the house. But with a sewer inspection from Valley Building Inspections, we can identify three of the most common things that clog sewers: grease, debris, and hair!

1. Grease

It can be tempting to pour that extra bit of grease down the drain, but it can quickly build up, clogging your sewer. As the grease cools, it solidifies and clings to the sides of the pipe, gradually narrowing the opening and restricting the flow of water. In addition, grease clogs can provide a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. As a result, it’s best to avoid pouring grease down the drain. Instead, scrape it into the trash or compost bin.

2. Debris

Debris clogging your sewer can come from a variety of sources. For many homeowners, this debris can be everything from child’s toys to sanitary supplies. During some sewer scopes, we even find diapers and flushable wipes, all of which you should never flush down the toilet. While it may not seem like much, this debris can quickly build up and cause a blockage. In some cases, the blockage may be severe enough to break the pipe or cause backflow into your spare bathroom. To avoid this, don’t flush anything down the toilet other than toilet paper.

3. Hair

Finally, the last most common culprit of clogged drains is hair. Whether it’s from shampooing in the shower or brushing your hair at the sink, small strands of hair can easily become trapped in the drain. Over time, these strands can build up and create a blockage. To help prevent clogged drains, be sure to regularly remove any hair that has collected in the drain. Using hair catchers in the drains of your showers and sinks can help prevent these clogs from forming, leaving you with a clear sewer.
